The origin of our leather

We use only cowhide that has been tanned in Italy in accordance with strict EU regulations. The raw hides come exclusively from German and Austrian pasture-raised cattle. We have deliberately chosen not to use cheap Asian leather because the production conditions, environmental standards and social conditions associated with it are unclear.

Characteristics and Care

Our leathers have been optimised for surface stability, ensuring excellent durability for several decades. The leather pores are sealed, which means the leather can be cleaned using a damp cloth and a little neutral soap solution (e.g. washing-up liquid).

Speaking of vegetable-tanned leather

There is no such thing as leather produced exclusively from plant-based substances. Calcium carbonate is also used here for depilation.
Unlike mineral-tanned leather, in which approximately 2 to 3 per cent of tanning agents remain, vegetable-tanned leather still contains 30 to 40 per cent of tanning agents in the finished product.
Vegetable-tanned leather always changes colour slightly when exposed to light (lightfastness rating of between 3 and 4) and may rub off to a greater or lesser extent.

  • absolutely non-slip even on glass, thanks to large anti-slip nubs the size of a pinhead,
  • clean with a damp cloth and neutral soap (washing-up liquid),

This is how we make our desk pads

Anyone can cut out a piece of leather and call it a desk mat. We are one of the very few craft workshops that still make them according to traditional craft principles.

The 1.5 mm thick full-grain cowhide leather is stretched over a recycled cardboard core (read on to find out why cardboard, of all things). To ensure that the edges, which we fold over to the reverse side, do not become too thick, the leather is trimmed (thinned) to around 0.2 mm at the edges. This prevents the leather from drying out at the edges, as happens with simply manufactured writing pads, and thus ensures it lasts considerably longer. We also avoid decorative stitching, as the leather dries out more quickly at the stitching points. Dried-out leather loses its strength. By laminating the leather on the reverse side, we give our desk pads a slight pre-tension to counteract the edges curling upwards over time. A desk pad is not subjected to tensile, bending or compressive stress. The cardboard therefore serves solely as a stabiliser. It offers the right balance between flexibility and weight.

Bespoke products

We can produce desk pads up to a size of 100 x 55 cm in any format you require. Our tolerance is plus or minus 2 mm.
